Dropcards - Business Cards That Look Like Money

Using Dropcards To Get Your Direct Mail Promos Read

Envelope with drop card showing through windowMost direct mail marketers put a sales letter into a plain envelope then affix a pre-addressed marketing lead address label.  Boring!  Most of them probably get tossed right into the trash.  Here's an easy way to increase the open rate on your direct mail campaigns.

Materials Needed

  1. Your usual hard copy sales letter
  2. #10 Window envelopes with single poly window
  3. Realistic dollar dropcards
  4. 3M Scotch Restickable Glue Stick (the adhesive stuff that's on Post-It Notes) or Elmer's Repositionable Picture and Poster Stick
  5. Pre-addressed marketing lead address labels

Instructions

Getting the letter folded to just the right size

  1. Remove the cellophane from a window envelope.  You'll use this envelope as a template so you'll be able to stick your address labels onto the sales letter in the correct position.
  2. Fold your sales letter and put it in the now cellophane-less template envelope.  Make sure the part exposed through the window is blank because that's where the address will display.  You don't want it shifting around inside the envelope so it doesn't hide the address label you're going to stick on it.
  3. repositionable, restickable glue sticksNow that you have the best fit, we need to figure out how to fold the other letters so pull the letter out of the envelope and open it up with the writing face up.
  4. Note the sentence (or area) where the first fold line is on the sales letter.  On a new unfolded sales letter, take the bottom of the letter and fold it up to barely meet (just below) where the fold line on the template letter is. Press the fold.  Now fold the top of the letter down over the previous fold.  If you open up the letter, the folds should be in the same spots as the template letter.

Positioning the address label

  1. Stick the newly folded sales letter into the cellophane-less template envelope, blank side showing through the window.
  2. For perfect positioning, apply a pre-address address label to the sales letter through the opening of the window.  As seen in the image above, do not place the address label too close to the left edge of the window opening as the dollar card needs space to peek through.
  3. Remove the letter from the template envelope and place it into an intact windowed envelope (one with cellophane).  The address label should be perfectly displayed through the window.

Positioning the dollar card

  1. drop card folded on an angleTake a folded dollar dropcard and position it into window of the envelope so that only a portion of it is showing through the window like in the picture on the right.  Don't obscure the address label.  The idea here is to have "money" showing through the window.  I like folding the card at an angle so lower part of the card is showing, too.  That way it looks like someone just stuffed it into the envelope.  To me it looks more natural.
  2. With the dropcard still inside the envelope, hold it in place with one hand while applying the restickable glue onto the face of the card in an area that is NOT displaying through the window, but is in contact with the envelope.  The adhesive will hold the dropcard in place within the envelope.  As the glue sets, the bond will become stronger, yet will still be removable just like a Post-It Note.
  3. Now mail as usual.

The recipient will see "money" in the envelope.  No one will be able to resist not opening the envelope.  The open rate on your direct mail campaign should increase dramatically and hopefully your sales will, too.
